Road Trip/Motion Sickness, Tips for Children on the Spectrum.

We will spend more time on the road as the holiday season approaches. We must prioritize the well-being of all passengers in the car during these long drives.

Many parents of children on the autism spectrum can relate to the feeling of trepidation when it comes to road trips, as children with autism are often prone to motion sickness. This is because of an over-responsive vestibular system in the eyes and inner ears, which regulates our sense of balance.

One important rule is to be aware of your child's "window of wellness." This refers to how long your child can go without feeling sick before motion sickness. Taking breaks and stopping the car before reaching that point is crucial to ensure your child's comfort and well-being during road trips.

Before hitting the road with a child who experiences motion sickness, here's a checklist of things to consider:

1. Avoid strong smells in the car.

2. Cover the car seats, floors, and backs of the front seats with an old bed sheet or disposable towels.

3. Wear old clothes for both you and your child.

4. Encourage your child to look straight ahead while in the car.

5. Keep a natural anti-sickness remedy within reach in the front of the car, such as Queasy Pops, water, baby wipes, an old towel, a kidney dish, or another receptacle.

6. Pack extra towels, baby wipes, a change of clothes, and a bottle of water in the trunk.

7. Consider having your child wear motion sickness bands or take a motion sickness tablet before the trip.

8. If there is still time, Have a light meal about two hours before departing. There is still time.

9. If other passengers will be in the car, brief them on the rules regarding scents and the frequency of pit stops, and ask them to be understanding and kind to the child if they experience motion sickness.

10. Remember, it will get easier!
