Ways to Help your Child Self- Regulate with Autsim

Self-regulation involves managing emotions and behavior in stressful situations.

Recognizing and expressing your emotions accurately is essential, especially during difficult situations.

Developing emotional regulation skills in children across various contexts can enhance their academic and social success.

Here are seven ways to encourage the process:

1-Engage in Therapy

Children learning to self-regulate can benefit significantly from various therapies, from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to neurofeedback, often when carried out simultaneously.

2-Establish Routines

Daily, those around the child can alleviate anxiety by establishing a regular routine, discussing any changes to the routine in advance, and providing timely reminders of upcoming events.

3-Use an Emotions Chart

A visual aid, such as an emotions chart featuring ‘happy,’ ‘sad,’ ‘angry,’ and ‘tired’ faces, can help your child identify their feelings at any given time. Use these discussion opportunities to highlight appropriate reactions to specific situations.

4-Enjoy a Movement Break

Encouraging and emphasizing the significance of taking physical breaks throughout the day is important. This benefits all children, regardless of whether they have sensory needs or not, as it allows them to reset and decompress. Taking a two-minute break to do jumping jacks, jog on the spot, or dance can be an effective way to take such breaks.

5-Practice Mindfulness

Spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness daily in a quiet space alongside your child. Explain that you will close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Please encourage them to notice their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations.

6-Model self-regulation

It's essential to keep in mind that young children who haven't yet learned to regulate their emotions may struggle to respond to logical or rational thinking when they're simply reacting in the moment. Instead, it's best to remain calm, show empathy, help them become more self-aware, and guide them through calming strategies.
