Communication Is More Than Words: Helping Children Express What They Need

Communication affects nearly every part of daily life.

It allows us to ask questions, make choices, express discomfort, connect with others, advocate for ourselves, and ask for help.

But communication does not look the same for everyone.

There Is More Than One Way to Communicate

Some children communicate primarily through spoken language.

Others may use gestures, facial expressions, pictures, sign language, communication devices, or a combination of methods.

The important question isn't whether communication looks typical.

It's whether the individual has an effective way to express their wants, needs, thoughts, and boundaries.

Why Functional Communication Matters

Imagine being overwhelmed but unable to communicate that you need a break.

Or not understanding an instruction but being unable to ask for clarification.

Those situations can quickly become frustrating.

Teaching functional communication gives children tools they can use in real situations.

That might include learning how to request help, make a choice, say no appropriately, communicate discomfort, or tell someone they need more time.

How ABA Can Support Communication

ABA therapy may include communication goals based on an individual's needs.

The focus should not simply be increasing the number of words a child uses.

Communication should be useful and meaningful in everyday life.

For some children, that may also involve collaboration with other professionals and caregivers so skills can be supported across environments.

Communication and Mental Health

Feeling heard matters emotionally too.

Children and adults benefit from having ways to express fear, anxiety, frustration, sadness, and other difficult emotions.

Mental health support can provide another space to explore those feelings and develop healthy coping and communication strategies.

At Amy’s Angels Health Care, our ABA and mental health services recognize that behavioral, developmental, and emotional well being are connected.

Communication isn't just about speaking.

It's about having a way to participate in your own life.
